Irvington Police Beat: Bobcat

Irvington receives award for 45 years without a human pedestrian fatality.

Irvington Police Chief P. Michael Cerone was extremely proud this week to have received a AAA Silver Award for 45 straight years without a pedestrian fatality in the village. He chalks the feat up to Irvington's cell phone enforcement program and regular truck safety checkpoints.

Nov. 17:

  • A dog was struck and killed on South Ferris Ave. The dog was described as a medium-sized, mixed-breed with black fur. The driver of the 2007 Volvo was not issued any summonses.

  • A resident called police at around 4 a.m. to say she'd received "numerous unwanted phone calls" from someone she did not know. Police called back the number identified on the resident's phone, but the person who responded denied making the calls. "No further action was taken," said Sgt. Michael Buck.
  • A resident reported that someone had used her information to open a fraudulent account at a Target in the Bronx. The ID theft would have cost the resident $1,091, had she not cancelled the charge immediately.

Nov. 19:

  • A Harriman Road resident was tattled on by a neighbor for burning leaves and debris in his backyard. Police came and extinguished the fire, explaining that it's "generally not a good idea to start fires in suburban neighborhoods," Buck said. No summonses were issued.
  • A Fieldpoint resident reported that an egg was thrown at her house just before midnight. (Police believe teenagers may have been involved...)

  • Irvington Officer James Egloff was dispatched to Hugh Hill just after noon when residents called saying they'd seen a bobcat in the woods. The officer confirmed the sighting. "We don't generally do anything unless an animal is aggressive in nature," Buck said. "You can't give him a summons anyway."
