Irvington Police Beat: Checkpoint Busts, Pot Arrests, Lotto Scams and More
This week's look at incidents investigated by Irvington police.

March 30
Weed Arrest Made at Mercy College
4:20 p.m.—Detective Kevin Johnson took three people into custody for unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. While patrolling the parking lot of Mercy College, he happened upon the group sitting in a 2003 Mitsubishi. The owner of the car, a 21-year-old female from Sparkhill, was arrested along with her male passengers, a 21-year-old Mountaindale resident, and a 20-year-old from Princeton, New Jersey. They were released on their own recognizance and return to court on April 11.

Lotto Scam Mailing Out Bad Bank of America Checks

10:26 a.m.—A 62-year-old resident reported receiving a letter which claimed that he won a $55,500 lottery in a customer compensation drawing. The letter came with a Bank of America cashier’s check in the amount of $3,500. The letter stated that in order to receive the full prize money, the resident needed to cash the check and then transfer $2,500, a tax fee, via Western Union. The letter instructed the resident to call them with their claim number once the transaction was complete. The resident recognized the scam and brought the letter and fraudulent check to police. Police are still investigating and have referred the case to the postal inspector’s office as well.
April 1
Water Rescue Boat Aids in Search of Jumper
4:44 a.m.—The Irvington Fire Department’s Water Rescue Boat was dispatched to assist in the search of a possible jumper from the Tappan Zee Bridge. The body of a man was later recovered in Tarrytown. See article
Bulldozer's Windows Smashed at Village Compost Site
11:28 a.m.—The Department of Public Works reported that someone smashed a 1965 Caterpillar Traxcavator at the village’s compost site on 170 Mountain Road. The front windshield and rear window were damaged on the bulldozer between 6:00 p.m. on March 31 and 9:00 a.m. on April 1. No estimate of damage has been given yet. When found, the person responsible will be charged with criminal mischief in the fourth degree.
$300 Stolen from Resident’s Bank Account
2:38 p.m.—A Beechwood Road resident reported that an unknown person stole a check from her and made an unauthorized withdrawal of $300 from her Chase checking account. The transaction was made electronically and took place on March 14. This matter is currently under investigation.
April 2
$300 Mailbox Damaged
10:55 a.m.—A Field Terrace resident reported that her mailbox had been damaged between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. The value of the mailbox is approximately $300.
April 6
Safety Checkpoint Issues 118 Summonses
Between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., in conjunction with Westchester County Solid Waste Commission, Westchester County Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, Westchester County Department of Consumer Protection, New York Department of Environmental Conservation, New York State Department of Transportation, and Sergeant Steven DelliColli of the Irvington Police issued a safety checkpoint along North Broadway.
The Immaculate Conception Church parking lot on 16 North Broadway was used to check commercial vehicles for inspection, and passenger cars were checked as they went through. During the checkpoint, a total of 118 summonses were issued. Five trucks and one trailer were taken out of service until mechanical problems that were identified were fixed.
Westchester County Department of Consumer Protection issued four summonses to unlicensed home improvement contractors.
Also, a 54-year-old Croton resident driving a 2003 Jeep Liberty, a 48-year-old operator of a 2006 Nissan from Monroe, a 41-year-old Toyota Prius operator from Mahopac, and a 23-year-old 1998 Honda Civic operator from Binghamton were taken into custody for suspended registration LPR hits. All had their vehicles impounded, plates seized, were released on their own recognizance, and return to court on April 25 for their vehicle misdemeanors.
iPod Touch Found & Returned to Owner
3:15 p.m.—Someone found an iPod Touch near Ardsley Avenue along the Croton Aqueduct. Police recognized someone in the photos in the device and it was promptly returned to the owner.
