Irvington School District Student-musicians Perform At Lincoln Center

IRVINGTON, NY — A group of young musicians from the Irvington Union Free School District participated in the Greater Westchester Youth Orchestras Association’s Spring Gala Concert, which took place at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall April 23. Irvington High School sophomore Aidan Cain (trumpet), sophomore Sohum Gala (violin), junior Sam Lapine (percussion), sophomore Chrysmine Wong (violin) and junior Brandon Weinstein (viola) performed with the Westchester Youth Symphony.

Members of the Westchester Junior Strings Orchestra were Irvington Middle School eighth-grader Mary Cuff (cello), eighth-grader Taylor Lee (cello), seventh-grader Reinesse Wong (violin) and eighth-grader Robert Yun (viola). Main Street School fourth-graders Shaleen Thaker (cello) and Alyssum Wong (violin) performed with the Westchester Elementary Strings Orchestra, according to a district spokesman.

“It was a magnificent set of performances and a spectacular day,” Irvington High School Principal David Cohen said. “It was such an impressive day as each of the ensembles played incredibly difficult pieces with elegance and technical beauty.”

The Greater Westchester Youth Orchestras Association, which is a nonprofit organization that helps young people develop self-esteem and promotes harmony through classical music training, is comprised of students in grades four through 12 from Westchester and the surrounding tri-state counties. The young musicians were selected from more than 300 students who auditioned for positions in the various orchestras.
