Irvington UFSD Students Return for a New School Year
Special activities made the first days special for students.
IRVINGTON, NY — The first day of school on September 6 for students in the Irvington Union Free School District meant seeing friends, comparing schedules, organizing their lockers and meeting new teachers.
Superintendent of School Dr. Kristopher Harrison said it was an amazing day for the district.
“As our students returned to our schools, such positive energy began to flow that will set the stage for a memorable year. Our faculty and staff are excited for a successful year that will be remembered for impressive student growth and achievement,” he said.

Teachers at Dows Lane Elementary School and Main Street School greeted their students, helped them organize their school supplies and guided them through their expectations for the year, a district spokesman said.
“It’s great to see my friends again,” Samara Laks, a fifth-grader said. “I really like reading and writing, and I’m very excited to do it again in school.”

The halls at the Irvington Middle School were filled with eighth-graders teamed up with sixth-graders for various first-day-of-school activities.
The system is designed to help the younger students make a smooth transition into their new school.
Students were treated to a barbecue in the courtyard and later participated in a scavenger hunt that sent them on an adventure around the building looking for clues in the classrooms, library, cafeteria, lockers and even the principal’s office.
Meanwhile, Irvington High School students jumped in with a regular full day of classes on the first day of school. Principal David Cohen said the school held assemblies by grade on September 8 and a picnic for all students on September 9.
