Letter to the Editor: Hastings-on-Hudson School Board Seeks to Fill Vacancy

The board is asking for people to consider volunteering to serve.

Dear Community Members,

As we start up a new school year, the Board is in an unusual position. We are one member short of the usual seven, as one of our members, Ms. Lindsey Hicks, has recently resigned. To fill this vacancy, the board will appoint someone to fill the seat until the next election, at which time the public will vote to fill the vacancy. So, if you ever thought about being a board member, or are just thinking about it now, this may be the time to put your name forward. Joining the Board of Education provides an opportunity to deepen your involvement with the district and to help shape and improve the educational experience for our students.

This is an interesting time to be on the board. We have two new board members, with new ideas and approaches. We have a district with experienced, talented, dedicated administration and staff. Yet finances are constrained and the larger educational landscape of high-stakes testing and state and federal initiatives makes many demands.

This year, a major focus for the board will be developing a new strategic plan for the district and all board members will be involved. Board members also serve on a number of committees and interface with different groups in the community.

The time commitment includes Tuesday evening board meetings, scheduled every other week, as well as committee meetings, which generally meet during the day, so some flexibility in your schedule is important. You must also be 18 years of age and a current resident who has lived in the district for at least one year and is eligible to vote.
