Marlies'Artbeat:Met Opera HD Encores for this Summer

Why should we have to do without some of the Met’s best Encores-In-HD-at-the-Movies just because it’s summer? Well, we don’t. Luckily our local theaters are part of the 400 movie venues across the US which are offering four very interesting transmission repeats this summer.

Here’s the line-up:

Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at 7:00 PM  -- Verdi’s RIGOLETTO (originally transmitted live 2/16/2014)

Set in LasVegas in the 1960s, this highly successful version stars Piotr Beczala as the Duke, Zeljko Luciz as Rigoletto, and Diana Damrau as the ill-fated Gilda.

Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at 7:00 PM – Puccini’s LA RONDINE (originally transmitted live 1/10/2009)

A Puccini step-child, but with a lovely score, the story-line of this operetta/opera is slightly reminiscent of La Traviata and the Vivien Leigh movie Waterloo Bridge. Set in the art-deco era, it stars Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna, who have performed and recorded it many times.

Wednesday, July 10, 2014 at 7:00 PM – Verdi’s OTELLO (originally transmitted live 10/27/2012)

Extremely well received, this thrilling retelling of the Shakespeare/Boito tragedy repeats one of Renee Fleming’s signature parts as Desdemona. The jealous moor is the powerful tenor Johan Botha and Falk Struckman sings the evil Iago. If you missed it the first time around, hurry, get your tickets!

Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 7:00 PM – The Pastiche: THE ENCHANTED ISLAND (originally transmitted live 1/21/2012)

This delicious amalgam of Shakespeare’s The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream presents us with about 30 Baroque arias and ensembles by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau and Purcell among others. It features some of the top stars the operatic world has to offer. You’ll be hearing David Daniels, Placido Domingo, Joyce DiDonato, just to name a few.

At WP CityCenterCinema15, Reserved seats cost $27 and opera general admission tickets are $25. At NR NewRoc City 18, all opera seats are general admission at $12.50.

There is a chance that two additional HD operas will be offered later, but this will not be announced until August.

These extras would be:

Gounod’s ROMEO ET JULIETTE with Anna Netrebko and Roberto Alagna. And Puccini’s LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST starring Deborah Voight and Marcello Giordani. Let’s hope they will be added for Westchester viewing.
