Becoming Disfarmer, a Curatorial Conversation

Join curator Chelsea Spengemann in a conversation about how Mike Disfarmer’s commercial studio photographs, made between 1914 and 1950 in Heber Springs, Arkansas, were revalued and recast as art twice, in 1974 and again in 2004. Panelists Hava Gurevich, Executive Director of the Disfarmer Project; Peter Miller, conservator of Disfarmer’s negatives; and Tanya Sheehan, contributor to the exhibition catalogue and Associate Professor of Art at Colby College, bring widely varying perspectives. Their conversation will complicate the meaning of Disfarmer’s portraits and locate them as objects from the past with resonance in a present, critical moment of thinking about photography.

CLUSTER: Urban Planning, Pedagogy and Activism in Post-Revolution Cairo

Located in Cairo, CLUSTER explores the shifting dynamics of urban space, culture and democracy in post-revolution Cairo through symposia, design workshops, exhibitions in downtown Cairo passageways, and pubic programs. Their conversation will be moderated by Hakan Topal, Assistant Professor of New Media and Art+Design at Purchase College.
