Rivertowns College Roundup: April 1-7

See what Rivertowns alumni are up to in the college worlds of sports.

Geneseo freshman Brendan Wortner of Dobbs Ferry, in his first 3,000 meter college Steeplechase race, at Washington and Jefferson College on Mar. 30th, won the event with a clocking of 10:11.21, with his Blue Knights finishing fourth in the meet. At The University of Rochester on April 6, he finished fourth of forty-one runners in the 5,000, with a time of 15:44.45. Geneseo's team was sixth, with 72 points.

Lacrosse defender Darien Bica of Irvington and Manhattan College, had two ground balls in a close 12-11 win over hosts Wagner College on April 2, while at the University of Detroit on April 6, he saw action in the 14-8 loss.

The Smith College women's V8 rowing crews finished third of five entries in a regatta on April 6, with Caroline Bishop of Irvington and Hackley one of the rowers.

At DePauw University on April 6, Jake Bernard of Irvington and Wooster College had three shots , one goal, which came on a teammate's pass at 5:28 of the first quarter, and one ground ball in the 24-0 blanking of the winless (0-9) Tigers.

Andy Catania of Dobbs Ferry and St.Olaf's men's tennis team, lost their matches with St. Mary's , 7-2, as he dropped another hard fought singles match, 4-6,76,(7-4), and 10-4, and he and his doubles partner lost theirs as well, 8-4. The record is now 2-2/3-4.

In the first of two home games with Tufts University on April 2, Madi Dinaso of Ardsley and Babson College entered as a pinch runner in the game. With Worcester Polytechnic Institute as the guests on April 6, after the Beavers had won the opener 5-1, she entered the game as a pinch hitter in the six run fifth inning, and grounded out. The record is 13-8.

Leading SUNY Maritime College at halftime, 9-2, the Manhattanville College was outscored 9 to 1 in the second half, with Justin Figueroa of Ardsley having two turnovers in the 13-11 setback. Hosting Babson on April 5, he had one shot that found the net in the 20-5 loss to the Babson College Beavers. The record is 0-10.

At the Ramapo College Road Runners Invitational Track meet on April 6, Sarah King of Dobbs Ferry and Vassar College placed third of ten runners in the women's 3,000 meter Steeplechase, with a clocking of 12:05.83. The Brewers finished ninth in the meet.

Jeremy Mancus of Irvington and Messiah College and his tennis team, at St. Lawrence University on April 5, lost to the Saints, 9-0. He lost his singles match, 6-2, 6-4, and his doubles twosome also fell, 8-3. On April 6, with Hartwick College, they topped the Hawks, 9-0, with Mancus outplaying his foe in singles, 6-1,6-0, and also took the doubles match,8-0. The record is 2-8/1-0.

Liam McHugh of Ardsley and The College of Mt. St. Vincent's lacrosse team had four ground balls and two caused turnovers in a home contest on April 2  with Mitchell College. In a tight 11-10 loss at Anna Maria College on April 4, he had one ground ball in the game. With Skyline Conference rivals,

Richard Stockton on April 6, he started at midfield in the 18-3 loss, and had five ground balls and three cause of turnovers, with the record now 4-7/0-2.

At the Ramapo College Roadrunners Invitational track and field meet on April 5 and 6, Sarah Moore of Irvington and Manhattan College finished seventh in the women's pole vault with her highest vault of 10-00.

Playing a double header at Albertus Magnus on Apr. 2nd, in a losing 4-3 game to their hosts, Alex Pezzuto of Hastings and shortstop at Johnson & Wales University had one run batted in, while in the nightcap, a 3-1 loss, he had one hit, scored a run, fanned once, and had one putout.. Hosting Bridgewater State on April 4, they dropped a 6-2 contest, with Pezzuto hitting 2-4, scoring a run, and having one putout and six assists in the game. With Curry College as the guests on April 5, he had a perfect 4-4 in batting, all singles including a bunt in the first frame, scored a run, had two stolen bases, and made two errors at shortstop in the 5-3 victory.  At La Selle College for a double bill on April 7, in game one he doubled and had one putout and three assists in  the 4-2 victory, while in the nightcap, he had two hits, scored a run, had one run batted in, fanned once, and had one putout, one assist, and made one error in the 4-1 win. He has a batting average of .421, and the team's record is 15-8/4-2.

On  April 4,  in a make up game at home with St.Anselm's College, the Southern New Hampshire University lost to their opponents,6-3, with second baseman Andrew Pezzuto of Hastings having two singles in five trips to the plate, striking out twice, and making three errors at second base. Hosting New Haven University on April 6 in a twin bill, they were blanked in the opener, 5-0, with Andrew having one hit and fanning once, while in the winning nightcap and the score 6-1, he had one run on one hit, plus one run batted in and struck out once, while brother Greg walked twice and was caught stealing by the catcher in attempted steal of second base. On April 7, in a losing home double bill with Southern Connectictut University, Andrew had one hit, two runs batted in, walked once, and fanned once in the first game 7-4 loss. In game two, he was hit by a pitch in the 12-4 setback. He leads the team in batting with a .433 average, while Greg's average is .286. The Penmen's record is 20-10/6-7.

In a 6-5 loss at Assumption College on April 2, Eddie Ritch of Dobbs Ferry and of American International College, scored one run, walked and fanned one time each, and had five putouts and three assists at shortstop. With Bloomfield at home on April 4, in the 5-4 win, he had one hit, scored a run, and had two putouts and four assists in the game. At St. Anselm in a double bill split on April 6, he had one hit, scored a run, and had five assists at short in the 3-0 win, while in the losing nightcap, he walked and fancced once each, and had three putouts, and three assists in the game. At St. Michael's on April 7, they copped the opener, 7-6, as Ritchfanned once, had one putout, and three assists, while in the nightcap, a 4-3 loss he had two singles, score a run, fanned once, and had three putouts and two assists in the game. His batting average is .205 and the team's record is 7-5 on the season.

In the losing double header to guests Albertus on April 2,Rita Saad of Irvington and The College of New Rochelle, played at third base in both games. In the opener, she walked once, fanned once, and had three assists at the hot corner, with the final score 13-0. In the nightcap, and 18-1 setback, she fanned once and had one assist in the game. With St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn in another twin bill on April 4, Saad had one putout in the 9-0 setback, while in game two, she fanned twice and had four putouts on the day. At Sarah Lawrence College in a double header on April 5,with the Blue Angels of The College of New Rochelle winning a 30 hit slugfest, 25-5, Saad found her batting eye, as she had two hits, scored a run, had two runs batted in, and made four putouts and had one assist in the win. Darkness caused game two to be cancelled. .

Pitching in his collegiate debut for Catholic University at home with Salisbury State University on April 3, Miles Semitis of Irvington hurled the final inning of an 8-2 loss to the Sea Gulls. He disposed of all three batters he faced, with two of them flying out and the other lining out.

Evening his record at 2-2 at home with Endicott College on April 3, port side hurler Mike Swerdloff of Ardsley and Brandeis University, started and pitched 7.1 innings, wherein gave up all four of the Sea Gulls' runs, allowed nine hits, and fanned four batters.

At the Carnegie-Mellon Quad Track & Field meet on April 6,Victor Yan of Irvington finished twelfth out of sixteen pole vaulters, with his highest vault being 3.29 meters.
