Rivertowns College Roundup: April 15-21

See what Rivertowns alumni are up to in the college worlds of sports.

  • David Andersen of Hastings and Ithaca College, in a tennis match on April 17 with Utica College, won his doubles match by a score of 8-2, won another doubles match, 8-2 on Apr. 20th, with guests Nazareth College,  as the record now stands at 4-11/3-1.
  • At the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's rowing championship on April 21, the Smith College second Varsity Eight shell, with Caroline Bishop of Hastings one of the crew, finished fourth in the race for the Florence Smith Cup, and was clocked at 7:07.68. Wellesley College took top honors in the meet with forty points, while Smith was tied with Simmons College for third place, with 24 points.
  • In a blanking of Hiram College on Apr. 14th, Jake Bernard of Irvington and Wooster College had one goal, one assist, three shots, one ground ball and one turnover in the 21-0 lacrosse game. With Kenyon at home on April 17, he scored one goal, had won assist, had seven shots, and 3 ground ball in the 7-5 victory over the Lords. In a 7-4 loss to Oberlin on April 20, he had two turnovers in the game, with the record now 9-5/4-3. The playoffs begin at Ohio Wesleyan University on April 23.
  • In a tennis match at Bethel University on April 21, the St. Olaf College men's tennis team topped the Royals, 7-2, as Andy Catania of Dobbs Ferry lost a nip and tuck singles match, 7-6,6-2,1-0(10-8), followed by an 8-6 win in the doubles match.
  • In a double header sweep at Endicott College on April 16, Madison Dinaso of Ardsley and Babson College, was the starting first baseman in both contests. In the opener, she had one run on one hit, plus a run batted in, as the Beavers topped the hosts, 11-2, and in the nightcap, went hitless in the 6-2 win. At Wellesley College on April 17 in the completion of a previously unfinished game, the hosts were the victors, 6-4. On April 17, in a pair of victories over their guests, the Lynx Lesley College, she played at first base in both games, and had one fielding error in the second game, with the scores 9-1 and 4-2 on the day.  On April 20, at home with the Smith College Pioneers, they blanked their guests, 10-0, with Dinaso having her best game at the plate, going 3-3, scoring two runs, and having one run batted in. In the nightcap, a 11-4 win, she had one hit, a single during the Beavers' six run third inning. The record is now 26-10/12-4.
  • In the thirteenth consecutive loss of the season, Justin Figueroa of Ardsley and Manhattanville College's men's lacrosse, scored one goal, had one shot, two ground balls, two turnovers, and two cause of turnovers, in a home game with the Arcadia College Knights on April 17. At King's College on April 20, they lost, 14-7, with Figueroa having two turnovers in the game. The Valiants record is 0-14.
  • At the Liberty League's Championship, held at Vassar on April 20, Sarah King of Dobbs Ferry and the hosting Brewers, finished eighth of ten competitors in the women's 3,000 Steeplechase, with a time of 12:01.46. Vassar finished fourth in the event, with ninety-seven points.
  • At Ithaca College on April 20, Jeremy Mancus of Irvington and Nazareth College dropped his singles match, 6-2,2-6, and 7-6(7-5), while his doubles duo also lost, 8-4. At Elmira College on Apr. 21st, they topped their hosts, 7-2, as Mancus out played his singles opponent, 6-3 and 6-2, while it was also a win the doubles  match, 8-1, with the record now 4-8/4-1.
  • After being tied at halftime, 6-6, the College of Mt. St. Vincent men's lacrosse team, were outscored 6-5 by hosts Mt. St. Mary's in the second half of the encounter. Liam McHugh of Ardsley had one ground ball and one turnover on the day. At Kean University on April 20, in an eighteen to five loss, he had two ground balls and one turnover. Hosting Bryn Athyn in the Senior Day game, as well as the season ender, on April 21 he had one shot, four ground balls, one turnover, and one caused turnover. The team's record was 6-10/2-5.
  • At Brandeis University on April 16, Alex Pezzuto of Hastings and Johnson and Wales University, had one assist in the first game, a 5-0 loss, while in the nightcap, in the four run fifth inning, he singled with the bags loaded, knocking in two runs. He also walked once, had one putout, and had four assists in the 6-3 win. At Salve Regina on April 17, in a 12-11 nail biting win, he had a double, scored two runs, walked and fanned once each, and had four putouts and seven assists at shortstop. Hosting St. Joseph's College of Maine in a twin bill on April 20, they dropped the opener, 5-2, with Pezzuto having a double in the game, and then won the nightcap, 6-5, he went one for four, fanned twice, had three putouts and three assists, plus being caught in a stealing attempt. With Suffolk University in a seasoning ending home double header on April 21 the Wildcats took both ends, 11-7 and 6-3. In the opener, he had one run batted in, walked twice, and had one putout and two assists, while in the finale,he went two for four at bat, three runs batted in, and two putouts and three assists in the curtain lowering game of the year.  He started in all except one game, was second in batting average, at .421, had 28 runs batted in, hit seven doubles, an on base percentage of .469, and stole seven bases during the campaign.The team's final record was 26-12/13-3.
  • In an 8-2 loss at St. Michaels' College on April 17, Andrew Pezzuto of Hastings and Cortland State University, had one hit, scored a run, walked twice, and had one stolen base. Hosting Bentley College on April 20, they were blanked in the first of two game, 4-0, with Pezzuto having one hit in four trips to the plate, while in game two, his brother Greg, returned to action in right field and had one hit in the 5-4 win, while Andrew batted two for five, scored two runs, and walked one and fanned once. The record is now 26-13/12-10.
  • At home on April 13, in the Bob Kahn Invitational track meet, Emily Polstein of Hastings and Oberlin College finished eleventh in the women's 5,000 meter race, with a clocking of 20:29.37, and her team were first in the meet, with 149.5 points. At Baldwin-Wallace on April 20, she finished twenty-first of twenty-seventh in the women's 1,500 meter race, clocked at 5:32.16.
  • In the first of two games at Western Connecticut University on April 17, Gary Riefenhauser of Dobbs Ferry and Purchase College, pitched 2.1 innings, and gave up three runs on three hits, walked and fanned one batter in the 12-11 setback, but was not involved in the decision. Hosting Yeshiva University on Senior Day, he was one of eleven such who were honored on the occasion. He pitched 1.0 innings in the opener, allowing no hits, and walking and fanning one batter each. The Panthers swamped their guests, 15-0 and 14-5, with the team record at 20-13/12-2, and with four games remaining on the regular schedule.
  • At Assumption College on April 16, the American International College baseball team lost, 8-3, with Eddie Ritch of Dobbs Ferry scoring two runs, walking once, fanning once, making one putout and having five assists at shortstop, gaining base on an erroir, and making one misplay in the game. Hosting Adelphi University on April 20, the Yellow Jackets split the double header, with he fanning twice, plus having two putouts, and having one assist in the opener, and scoring one run, walking once, fanning twice, making one putout, and having four assists in the contest. The Panthers took the first game, 3-0 while A.I.C. prevailed in the second,16-4. In a single game on April 21 an 11-1 win In a single game with the visitors, Ritch struck out twice and had three assists at short. The team's record is now 15-16/6-12.
  • Hosting Purchase in a softball twin bill on April 16, The College of New Rochelle Blue Angels lost both games,10-2 and 16-1, with third baseman Rita Saad of Irvington having one run on it hit, walking once,an having three putouts at the hot corner. In game two, she had one putout, one assist, and two errors in the fray. With St. Joseph's of Brooklyn in another double header on April 18, she played in the opener, an 18-3 loss, and had one hit and fanned once. At Mt. St. Mary College on April 19, Saad  struck out in the 11-0 loss, and then in game two, an 8-5 setback, she also fanned once. The record is 3-22.
  • On April 13 at Loyola U. of Baltimore, Julian Saliani of Irvington and Johns Hopkins, was fifth in the men's 1600, with a time of 3:59.30, while on April 19 at the Widener College Invitational, he was eighteenth of ninety- seven runners in the men's 1,500, with a clocking of 3:59.28.
  • In the second half of a double header at home with Springfield College, southpaw hurler Mike Swerdloff of Ardsley and Brandeis University, went the distance, allowed three runs on nine hits, walked one batter, fanned six, but had no batting support from his teammates in the 3-0 loss, who only managed two hits off the Pride's pitcher, with his record now 2-5. on the season. The team's record is 10-19.
  • On April 20, at the rowing regatta in Clemson, South Carolina, Nikki Tsamis of Dobbs Ferry and Duke University's second V8 rowing crew, finished sixth in the morning race, with a time of 6:55.6, and then in the afternoon, they were seventh, clocked at 6:43.3.
  • On April 13, at the Bucknell University Invitational track meet, Brendan Wortner of Dobbs Ferry and Geneseo State College, placed fourteenth in the 3,200 men's Steeple Chase, with his time of 9:58.77.
