"When General Grant Expelled the Jews"-Jonathan Sarna

Jonathan Sarna relates a remarkable story in this 2012 book. In the 2nd year of the Civil War (December 1862) General Grant, commander of territories in Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi, ordered the expulsion of Jews "as a class" from the territories under his command because two Jewish business partners of his father had been involved in smuggling of cotton from the Confederacy. When President Lincoln learned of Grant's order, he immediately countermanded it. The long term fallout from Grant's order is the principal subject of Sarna's book and make "a compelling, even inspiring tale of redemption" (quoting from review in Commentary Magazine).
