City of Rochester receives $1M state grant for Hotel Cadillac project (rbj.net) — Rochester has secured a $1 million state grant to help convert the long-vacant Hotel Cadillac on Chestnut Street into 42 mixed-income and supportive apartments, including units for homeless young adults and artists. The funding will pay for key infrastructure work like new sewers, water lines, and sidewalks, advancing a $21 million project that partners with the YWCA and Flower City Arts Center.
2. Program that gives teachers free school supplies just found a new home in Rochester, helped more than 700 last year (whec.com) — A free school-supply program for teachers, Pencils & Paper, has moved into the Rochester Rehabilitation Center at 1357 University Avenue, continuing to serve high-need schools across Greater Rochester. After helping more than 700 teachers last year, the program lets educators shop donated supplies at no cost, and organizers are encouraging eligible schools to participate and community members to donate.
3. Evans cites progress in affordable housing efforts (rochesterbeacon.com) — Rochester officials are rolling out several programs to add about 100 new affordable homes and expand rental options across city neighborhoods, including JOSANA and North Clinton. Backed by more than $1.5 billion in investment since 2022, the initiatives focus on homeownership, code enforcement, and revitalizing vacant lots, with new factory-built homes and Rochester Roots applications expected to open starting in 2027.
4. He fled violence in Africa to start a new life in Rochester – now his family is demanding answers in his death (whec.com) — Rochester Police are investigating the homicide of Congolese refugee Mmunga Eloco, whose body was found Sunday along the Genesee River Trail. Loved ones from Rochester's Congolese community are mourning his loss and urging anyone with information to contact 911 as the Major Crimes Homicide Unit searches for answers.
5. Rochester woman takes wrong turn into border crossing, gets arrested over handgun (13wham.com) — A 52-year-old Rochester woman was arrested at the Lewiston Bridge border crossing after accidentally driving into the port of entry and declaring a 9mm handgun, authorities say. Customs officers determined she lacked a New York pistol permit, seized the weapon, and turned her over to State Police on a felony criminal possession charge.
