Today's riddle: Why was the scarecrow given an award? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Rochester could spend $1.15M to reopen Peace Village (ithacajournal.com) — Rochester City Council will vote October 6 on whether to spend $1.15 million in opioid settlement funds to reopen Peace Village, the city's sanctioned homeless encampment on Industrial Street. If approved, the money would fund staffing, safety upgrades, and 19 pallet shelters through June 2027, offering low-barrier shelter and on-site case management for unhoused adults across Rochester.
2. Rochester Auto Show discontinued after more than a century (democratandchronicle.com) — The long-running Rochester Auto Show, a staple for local car shoppers since 1908, has been permanently discontinued, with no reason given. Organizers thanked Rochester-area exhibitors and urged residents to visit local franchised dealerships directly for future vehicle shopping instead of relying on the now-ended show.
3. Aurora House fundraiser draws 250 people, aims to raise $20,000 for free end-of-life care (whec.com) — A Rochester fundraiser drew about 250 people to support Aurora House, which offers free end-of-life care without government funding. Volunteers organized more than 150 raffle baskets and a fashion show, aiming to raise $20,000 so local families can continue receiving compassionate care at no cost.
4. Foodlink's Community Farm in Rochester celebrates first full year with annual festival (whec.com) — Foodlink's community farm on Lexington Avenue in Rochester marked its first full growing year with a free Fall Festival featuring food, giveaways, and tours. The expanded space now supports more than 100 community gardeners, thousands of starter plants for gardens across Rochester, and field trips for every Rochester City School District third grader, emphasizing hands-on lessons in growing and cooking healthy food.
5. Rochester hosts 3rd annual HBCU football game (13wham.com) — Rochester just wrapped up its third annual HBCU Classic Football Game at the Community Sports Complex, drawing big crowds, marching bands, and visiting teams from Virginia State and Lincoln University. Beyond the on-field action, the city used the event to highlight HBCU culture and connect Rochester students with college opportunities, turning the day into a lively mix of football, music, and future planning.
