10 People Displaced In Hempstead Fire, Fire Marshal Says

The fire broke out in the basement and first floor of a two-story house, officials say.

HEMPSTEAD, NY — Ten people are out of their Union Place home Monday after a fire in a two-story house in Hempstead, the Nassau County Fire Marshal said.

The fire marshal’s office said the alarm was raised at 1:42 p.m. Sunday, with the Hempstead Fire Department responding to the scene. Mutual aid came from Baldwin, Elmont, Freeport, Garden City and West Hempstead departments, bringing the total number of firefighters on the scene to about 60, officials said.

According to fire officials, the first responders to the scene saw the fire in the house’s basement and first floor. The 10 occupants were displaced by the fire that was brought under control within 40 minutes, fire officials said. The NCPD arson bomb squad and fire marshal’s office are now investigating the cause of the fire, while the building department was also notified, fire officials said.

Fire officials did not report any injuries Sunday.
