10-Year-Old Charged For Bringing Gun To School: Nassau Police

Police say he brought the gun to school and was showing it to a friend when an aide found it. No one was injured.

A 10-year-old boy was charged after police say he brought a gun to school and was showing it to his friends.

According to police, while in the lunch room of Meadow Elementary School in Baldwin at 11:15 a.m. on Monday, the 10-year-old and his friend were seen by a lunch aide playing with and looking into a fabric lunch bag that looked as if it contained a heavy object. The aide approached the children, looked into the bag and found a loaded .40 caliber handgun. No one was injured.

The 10-year-old was taken to the principal's office and the police were called. Police took the child to the First Precinct, where he was custodialized and processed with his father present.

Police say they are investigating where the gun came from, and believe the boy took it from a relative's home.

The 10-year-old was charged with criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds. He is due in Family Court in April.
