#100 — Sledding at Hempstead Lake

Take a snowy trip down the frozen hill at Lakeside Drive.

It seems only too appropriate to begin our "100 Things to do in Rockville Centre" column with a wintry attraction, given the record breaking amount of snow we’ve gotten in past weeks. Snow sledding can be fun for all ages, even for those who have forgotten because it’s been too long — which was the case for me before I visited the spot over the weekend.

The snow hill at Lakeside Drive is located off of Peninsula Blvd. in Hempstead Lake State Park. The hill overlooks the frozen lake, also covered with a hefty collection of this month’s snow.

On a Sunday afternoon, the hill was crowded with families, mostly small children with siblings, cousins and parents in tow. The parents weren’t afraid to get in on the action either, riding down on sleds with their kids and even taking some solo rides.

After a few runs, I’d had enough of the cold, but I appreciated the stroll down a January memory lane. However, for anyone with a free Sunday + kids, sledding can keep the young ones entertained for hours on end.
