3 Taken Into Custody For Attempting To Rob Oceanside Nassau: Police

It happened Thursday afternoon at the Hampton Road store.

OCEANSIDE, NY — Three men were arrested for attempting to rob the Costco store on Hampton Road in Oceanside.

Just before 2 p.m. on Thursday, two male employees spotted the suspects pushing shopping carts full of merchandise through the emergency fire exit, police said.

Darnell Slaughter, 18, of Brooklyn, ran with the cart toward one of the workers, striking him in the left elbow, authorities said.

Four suspects abandoned the shopping carts and ran toward a U-Haul van that Shamari Lawrence, 21, of Queens, was driving, police said.

They fled on foot. A short time later Lawrence was located and placed under arrest. Police said he was in possession of multiple credit cards that were not in his name.

Slaughter was picked up on Lawson Boulevard and was placed in custody.

A 17-year-old from Brooklyn was also placed under arrest.

The investigation is continuing. The three defendants were charged with two counts of second-degree robbery and one count of second-degree assault. They were expected to be arraigned on Friday.
