41-Year-Old Man Found In Backseat Of Car Faces Assault Charges: Police

Police say the man became violent with police officers who were investigating an in-progress larceny.

ELMONT, NY. — A 41-year-old homeless man faces multiple assault charges after becoming violent with police officers during an arrest at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday in Elmont, police said.

Nassau County police said they responded to an Elmont home early Tuesday morning after receiving a call about a larceny in-progress. Upon arrival, police said officers found 41-year-old Maynor Ponce in the backseat of a Chevy that was parked at the residence. The rear window of the Chevy was broken, police said.

During the police investigation, Ponce became violent and combative with officers, resisting arrest, police said. After the arrest, police said they found Ponce to be in possession of a substance they believed to be crack cocaine.

Ponce was arrested and the officers were injured, police said. Ponce now faces two counts of second-degree assault, one third-degree charge of criminal mischief, one charge of petit larceny, one seventh-degree charge of criminal possession of a controlled substance, a charge of resisting arrest, a charge of obstructing governmental administration and an active warrant from Nassau County, police said. His arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday, police said.
