5 Former South Side Players/Coaches Honored

Three soccer players and a coach from the 1980s were inducted into the Nassau County High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — South Side High School is getting plenty of recognition. Three members of the women's soccer team have been inducted into the Nassau County High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

  • Kim Conway-Haley helped the Cyclones to the state title in 1987. A year later she was named to the first-ever All-State team. She went to star at the University of Virginia and was inducted into the Long Island Soccer Player Hall of Fame.
  • Dina Grossman-Case was instrumental in building the school's soccer dynasty. She was a key player on the Cyclones 1986 squad that went to its first state championship game, alternating between midfield, striker and defensive center midfielder.
  • Traci Sofsian-Maier was a star defender on the 1987 and 1988 state title teams. A charter member of the Long Island Rough Riders women's team, Sofsian-Maier was inducted into the Long Island Soccer Player Hall of Fame last year.
  • Cheryl Scalise spent 30 years as the South Side women's volleyball coach, where she amassed a 444-134 record. She also was a gymnastics coach, notching 112 wins in 18 seasons.
  • Dotty Lynch was a South Side High School volleyball coach, guiding her squads to five consecutive division titles in the 1980s. Lynch then transitioned to becoming an official, overseeing 30 county finals and two state finals.

They are part of the 48-member Class of 2020. The ceremony was postponed last year due to COVID-19. They were officially inducted on Sept. 29.
