Adam Skelos Ordered To Psychological Treatment By Judge

The judge set the treatment as a condition for his bail before the retrial for Adam and his father begins in June.

Adam Skelos, who was convicted along with his father Dean of political corruption and then had the charges dismissed, was sentenced by a judge to receive mental health treatment as part of his bail pending his retrial.

Adam is the son of Dean Skelos, the former state Senate majority leader, who was convicted of federal corruption charges in December 2015. The two were sentenced to jail in May 2016, but the decision was overturned after a Supreme Court ruling altered the definition of what constitutes public corruption.

The two, who both live in Rockville Centre, are scheduled to have their new trial begin in June.

But until then, U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood ordered Adam to undergo treatment, Newsday reported. During the trial, Adam's defense attorney brought up a history of abuse by his step-father (not Dean) as a reason Adam may have acted the way he did.

At the original sentencing, Adam was given a harsher punishment than his father. Dean Skelos was sentenced to five years in jail, while Adam received a 6 1/2 year sentence.
