WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY — While the New York Islanders’ season comes to an underwhelming conclusion, hockey in Nassau County got a bit of a lift Monday: Ground broke on the Police Athletic League hockey rink at Halls Pond Park in West Hempstead.
According to an announcement, the rink will be constructed by Pratt Brothers, Inc., a Hauppauge-based contractor that said the work would take about six months to complete.
According to one elected official involved with the project, the rink will provide a valuable place for young people in West Hempstead to find recreation for a long time going forward.
“For generations of families, the ice hockey rink at Halls Pond Park has been a tremendous asset to West Hempstead and its neighboring communities and the host for countless P.A.L. programs that provided our youth with safe, structured program that enriched their lives,” Legislator Nicks said. “I am thrilled that we have broken ground on a 21st-century facility that will be enjoyed by local families and leagues for many years to come.”
