HEMPSTEAD, NY — A fire in a vacant home in Hempstead ended tragically Sunday morning, with authorities recovering two dead bodies in the aftermath of the blaze, fire officials said.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal said the fire broke out at 1:28 a.m. Sunday in a vacant home on Sycamore Avenue in Hempstead Village, with the Hempstead Fire Department first on the scene. Mutual aid from the Baldwin, East Meadow, Freeport, Garden City, Rockville Centre, Roosevelt, South Hempstead, Uniondale and West Hempstead departments brought the total firefighting presence to 75 people, officials said.
Authorities said the fire was brought under control within two hours, with the bodies of two people being discovered during fire department operations. Outside the two people who were found in the home, officials said there were no civilian or firefighter injuries.
In the aftermath of the fire, the fire marshal’s office said NCFM investigators and NCPD arson/bomb detectives were investigating its cause. The Hempstead Village building department was also called to the scene to assess what the fire marshal’s office called “serious damage…with collapse” to the house.”
Fire officials did not identify the two people whose bodies were found in the home Sunday.
