ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — The Hempstead Industrial Development Agency handed out an economic incentives package this week that will clear the way for construction of a 63-suit Tru by Hilton Hotel, the IDA announced Tuesday.
According to the IDA, the 63-unit hotel will go up on a triangular, half-acre site at 150 Sunrise Hwy once it clears public hearing and further IDA review. The project is expected to create 25 full-time jobs and 40 construction jobs, with an average salary across those jobs of $76,500 per year.
The proposed Hilton location would be the result of an $18.6 million investment coming from Freeport-based developer Ellis Abramson — also the owner of the Hampton Inn and Suites at 125 Merrick Rd. in Rockville Centre — the IDA said.
“This proposed hotel will bring new jobs and taxes to the Town and other jurisdictions, while providing hotel rooms on the South Shore, where demand is strong, but supply is insufficient,” IDA CEO Fred Parola said.
According to town officials, the goal of the Tru by Hilton is to service travelers who fly into JFK airport; officials noted the location is just minutes on foot from the Rockville Centre LIRR station and a half-mile from downtown. The former La-Z-Boy furniture store would, under the proposal, become a midscale, “limited service” chain that IDA officials said targets millennial travelers. With a fitness room and a breakfast buffet on site, officials said the Tru by Hilton would offer an option similar to a Hampton Inn, with rooms that mostly feature king-and queen-sized beds in a 29,000 square-foot space.
As for the visitors who come to the hotel, one economic study submitted to the IDA said they would have the pleasure of exploring RVC's bustling downtown.
"The immediate area features a dense concentration of restaurants and retail, forming a vibrant urban core with strong visibility and activity," the study reads. "This commercial corridor transitions into stable single-family residential neighborhoods just beyond the core, supporting consistent local demand and reinforcing the area
as a primary economic and social hub. The concentration of food and beverage offerings enhances walkability and serves as a key amenity for hotel guests."
The developers secured a 20-year PILOT agreement, a sales tax exemption on building materials and a mortgage recording tax exemption, the IDA said.
