UNIONDALE, NY — With summer road trip season fast approaching, Nassau County parents will have the chance to ensure their children are riding safely thanks to a free car seat safety check.
The safety checks are being offered through a partnership between county legislator Olena Nicks, the Nassau County Police Department’s office of community affairs and Nassau County’s department of traffic safety, on offer from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday. Nicks’ office said certified technicians will be on-site to check the installation and protection provided by car seats. According to the legislator’s office, any resident with a child who rides in a booster seat or a car seat is encouraged to have that seat checked.
“Vehicle accidents are a leading cause of death and injury for children in the United States, and as a longtime member of the Uniondale Fire Department and a public servant, I am committed to keeping our communities safe in any way I can,” Nicks said. “Please take advantage of this opportunity to have your car seats inspected by Nassau PD professionals – it is a great way to get the peace of mind you deserve at no cost to your family.”
While Nicks said accidents are a leading cause of injury and death in kids, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that car seats — when installed properly — can be a remedy against that.
The Uniondale Public Library is located at 400 Uniondale Ave. in Uniondale.
