OCEANSIDE, NY — Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital earned nine "high performing" marks from U.S. News & World Report Tuesday, earning its first recognition for pacemaker implantation while also placing high in eight other disciplines.
In addition to that pacemaker placement, Mount Sinai South Nassau was awarded for its performance in Colon Cancer, Diabetes and hip fracture treatment for the second year in a row; and heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and pneumonia treatment for the third straight year.
U.S. News publishes its annual procedures and conditions ratings with the goal of helping people have more information before making decisions about their healthcare. The rankings are compiled after U.S. News evaluates hospitals on 14 different adult specialties and 23 procedures and conditions, analyzing hospitals' performance with criteria like risk-adjusted mortality rate, preventable complications and level of nursing care. In total, Mount Sinai South Nassau officials said there were over 800 million pieces of data analyzed to make these rankings.
From a pool of 4,495 hospitals and an exhaustive set of criteria, Mount Sinai South Nassau was one of just 415 to earn nine high performing honors.
"U.S. News' High Performing rankings validate what we already know from the choices our patients are making every day—that Mount Sinai South Nassau increasingly is the hospital of choice for the South Shore," Mount Sinai South Nassau President Joshua Kugler said. "We set the standard for health care in our community as we continue to expand advanced procedures and care in many areas, including for stroke and cardiac services. Our entire team of professionals and support staff work every day to provide our patients with the expert health care they deserve, close to home."
Mount Sinai South Nassau was also awarded a high performing rating in maternity care, an award that was given out back in December.
The awards come at a time when the hospital is expanding, with five new operating rooms set to come online this fall in a four-story, 100,000-square-foot, $150 million facility dubbed the Feil Family Pavilion. Of those nine, two operating rooms will be set aside for open-heart surgery, two will be earmarked fro advanced neurological cases while five will be general use, the hospital said. In addition to the new operating rooms, Mount Sinai South Nassau is also scheduled to open a new emergency department with 40 new intensive and critical care beds in that same building.
The new open-heart operating rooms, the hospital said, will allow for Mount Sinai South Nassau to start an open-heart program at the Oceanside campus, bringing surgeons from Manhattan to the south shore for advanced cardiac procedures including open-heart surgery.
