Assemblyman Brian Curran (Lynbrook-21st A.D.) today announced that he will partner with local school officials and Long Island Assemblymen in hosting a Common Core Forum titled, “Where do we go from here?” The forum will take place Thursday, January 28 at 7 p.m. at South Side Middle School in Rockville Centre. Curran, a staunch opponent of Common Core and student, parent, teacher advocate, noted that he will be joined by Assembly Education Committee Ranker Assemblyman Ed Ra (R-Franklin Square), Assemblyman David McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick), Rockville Centre Superintendent Dr. William Johnson, Valley Stream 13 Superintendent Ms. Constance D. Evelyn, Covert Principal Mr. Darren Raymar, Jeanette Brunelle Deutermann from Long Island Opt Out, and retired South Side High School Principal Carol Burris.
“This forum is designed as an informational session for discussing where we as a state will go with Common Core and the latest reports from the legislature and governor’s office,” said Curran. “Our children, parents, teachers and school administrators have a right to know how these new items will impact our state’s education policy. I want to thank our panel of special guests for their confirmed attendance and encourage everyone to spread the word about this extremely informative forum.”
Curran added that since its implementation, he and his Republican Conference colleagues have spearheaded reform efforts to end Common Core and amend its failed rollout. Recently, Curran supported legislation that would have undone the bad policies pushed on budget night by the governor and Assembly Democrats. Curran said that Assembly Democrats and the governor doubled-down on Common Core at the end of April when they held Republican legislation in committee that would have stopped the curriculum and protected students and schools wishing to opt out of testing.
