This week, Assemblyman Brian Curran (Lynbrook-21st A.D.) introduced a resolution (K.539) on the floor of the New York State Assembly to honor fallen NYPD Officer Steven McDonald of Malverne. Officer McDonald passed away earlier this year due to complications from an incident in 1986 in which he was shot in the line of duty.

“It is with great sadness for the loss of this fine police officer, but pride for the tremendous work he did to protect our community, that I introduce this resolution today,” said Curran. “This man, whose career was taken from him while serving to protect others, showed true courage and strength when he publicly forgave the man responsible. That kind of courage is not found very often.”

McDonald served in the U.S. Navy before proudly becoming a third generation NYPD officer, following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather before him. His son, Sgt. Conor McDonald, represents the fourth generation to uphold the department’s motto, “Fidelis Ad Mortem” or “Faithful Unto Death.”

Steven McDonald served as an inspiration to the community, speaking at several events and refusing to let his disability stop him from a life of love and fulfillment. His funeral was held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City with thousands on hand to pay him tribute – a farewell fit for a true hero.
