Assemblyman Curran Discusses Preventing Domestic Violence at Local Forum

Domestic violence experts, law enforcement, members of the criminal justice system, and those with firsthand experience were also invited.

Assemblyman Brian Curran (Lynbrook-21st AD) was recently joined by colleagues from the Assembly Minority Conference to host a forum in Farmingdale which focused on addressing the complex issues involved in the prevention of, and response to, domestic violence in New York communities. Invitees included non-profit service providers, community-based domestic violence experts, law enforcement and the criminal justice system, as well as families and those with firsthand experience of domestic violence.

“Education and prevention are the keys to stopping domestic violence,” said Curran. “Additionally, we must change the current culture that treats women as second class. Domestic abuse rips families apart, leaving nothing behind but deep physical and emotional scarring for the victims caught up in it, especially children. This committee has come together to hear testimony from professionals and victims alike so we can learn how best to support victims, provide pathways for them to escape domestic violence and support the efforts of law enforcement officials to stop the plague of abuse.”

The Assembly Minority Conference Steering Committee hosted its fifth regional forum at Farmingdale State College. Discussions focused on identifying gaps in services and programs for domestic violence victims, enhancing and creating pathways which ensure greater safety for victims and ensuring law enforcement measures are in place to hold abusers accountable.
