Assemblyman Curran: Government Can No Longer Operate in the Shadows
Government spending, ethics, tax dollars

Today, Assemblyman Brian Curran (Lynbrook-21st A.D.) and his Assembly Republican colleagues called for greater transparency regarding the spending of millions in taxpayer dollars for Gov. Cuomo’s pet projects.
“Nassau County residents are taxed at an oppressive rate as it is, but the governor adds insult to injury by doling out our tax dollars to cronies in the hopes that they return the favor and contribute to his presidential campaign fund,” said Curran. “This legislation calls for an end to shadow spending by the governor and his appointees. This state has already been exposed in the last two years as one of the most corrupt in the nation due to the acts of former legislative leaders. Now, Cuomo’s former aides have been exposed and indicted on federal bribery charges related to the awarding of tax dollars for the ‘Buffalo Billion project. Clearly, state government is still in need of significant ethics reform.”
The Assembly Minority Conference is also calling for implementing eight-year term limits for legislative leaders and committee chairs; replacing JCOPE with a new, independent five-member Commission on Official Conduct; prohibiting the spending of campaign funds for personal use, including the use for criminal defense fees and creating a new crime of failure to report corruption.
