Assemblyman Brian Curran (Lynbrook-21st AD) and Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Erin King-Sweeney recently joined the Green Acres Mall on Monday, August 22 to host a back-to-school giveaway. Fifteen backpacks were donated and handed out to children at the Bethany House in Baldwin, and 135 were given to local students preparing for school. Curran has been a strong advocate for students and education since being elected to the state Assembly. Members of the community were encouraged to come and receive a back-to-school backpack and school supplies in preparation for the coming school year.
“It is important to give to the children of the community, they are the future of our state, and setting them up for success benefits not only the children but the community as a whole,” said Curran. “Making sure they are properly equipped and prepared for the coming school year is crucial. All children deserve a fair shot at a proper education, and being properly equipped can only help them in that endeavor. It is important to let the young people know we stand by them and support their educational goals. I would like to thank Green Acres for making this event possible. ”

Bethany House is a non-profit organization consisting of three homelike residences for homeless families with special needs. The Bethany House exists to strengthen and assist homeless women and children from Long Island who are deprived of the basic resources required for natural and healthy growth and development. Established in 1978, the Bethany House was the first emergency shelter on Long Island, and provides safe housing, services and resources to homeless families in the area.
”Green Acres is proud to be an active and involved community partner, and each year we look forward to our Backpack Giveaway,” said Marketing Manager Sara McGuinness. “In partnership with our local officials, we were able to donate 800 supply-filled backpacks to children in need in time for the back to school season - 150 of those were donated through Brian Curran’s office. Green Acres is so much more than a shopping center, we truly are a place for the community to come together and make a difference on Long Island.”
