Assemblyman Curran Honors Those Fighting Childhood Cancer on St. Baldrick's Day
St. Baldrick's Day

On March 18, Assemblyman Brian Curran (Lynbrook-21st A.D.) took part in the St. Baldrick’s Day ceremonies at St. Agnes Cathedral in which he and many others, including John Bender, co-founder of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, had their heads shaved to raise awareness of childhood cancer. This was the 13th straight year Assemblyman Curran has participated.
“This event means a great deal to me. There are more than a dozen types of childhood cancers that affect 300,000 children worldwide and this is one small way in which I can help raise awareness for the cause,” said Curran. “More children die of childhood cancer than any other disease in the United States and we must do more to help those fighting it to win the battle.”
According to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, less than 4 percent of the National Cancer Institute’s budget is dedicated solely to childhood cancer research, and only three new drugs have been approved in the last 20 years specifically to treat children with cancer.
