Assemblyman Curran on Symbolic 'Sunshine Week'

Sunshine Week, Ethics, Transparency in Government

“Today marks the start of ‘Sunshine Week’ in the state Capitol. It is a symbolic term that is supposed to remind legislators that government operations must be transparent to the public. Assembly Democrats seem to have forgotten that, having blocked 12 reform measures to do so that were proposed by my colleagues and me in January. There is no reasonable explanation for keeping the public in the dark – unless they have something to hide. We must put an end to the deceitful practice of negotiating the budget, selecting members to the Board of Regents and deciding the fate of various other policies behind closed doors that affect all of New York State. Three individuals making handshake agreements in a room is not how our government should operate. Members of this Legislature are elected to provide equal representation to all residents of this state and as such, all voices should be heard.”
