Baldwin Becomes 1st School District In US With 'Smart Lockers'

The new lockers are part of $900,000 in upgrades.

BALDWIN, NY — One local school district is a technology leap with lockers.

Baldwin schools became the first district in the country to use a hands-free locker system, CBS2 reported.

The "smart lockers" get rid of the need for remembering padlock combinations.

Although most high school students stopped using lockers since the pandemic, the district is replacing the vintage ones with larger spaces for books and supplies. It is part of a $900,000 grant.

Students will use identification cards for the new lockers, CBS2 said.
