Baldwin High Schoolers Win Broadcast Award For Sports Feature
A pair of Baldwin High School students won a Broadcast Alliance for Senior High (BASH) award this week.
BALDWIN, NY — Baldwin High School students Jonnae Greene and Fahiem Jenkins became award-winning filmmakers this week, as the duo took home first place in the “Best Sports Feature — Showcase Division category” at the Broadcast Alliance for Senior High (BASH) awards for their feature package, “The Powerhouse Project.”
Focusing on Baldwin’s varsity football team, district officials said “The Powerhouse Project” was an exemplary display of the storytelling, reporting and production skills honed in the district’s media curriculum.
The BASH Awards, founded in 2017 by the Southold School District, celebrate the brightest young voices in school news broadcasting and digital storytelling, taking submissions from over 1,000 students in more than 60 schools across Long Island and New York City.

While the student-made feature earned high praise at the awards ceremony, held at Hofstra University, there was also plenty of praise coming in from right at home.
“I am incredibly proud of our students and production team for achieving this first-place honor, which reflects their talent, dedication and commitment to excellence in sports storytelling,” assistant director of instructional programs Dr. Gabriella Franza said.

The feature was also produced in conjunction with Youth Change Leaders Collaborative (YCLC) Studios, which teaches Baldwin students how to report, film, edit and publish digital packages like “The Powerhouse Project.”
The award ceremony wasn’t the only thing Greene and Jenkins got to take part in at the BASH awards, either: The duo were able to attend educational sessions with industry professionals, Hofstra faculty and their student broadcast colleagues.
