BALDWIN, NY. — Baldwin High School’s mathletes team took their talents to Hempstead in February, traveling as a unit to take part in the Nassau Math Tournament at Hofstra University. In that tournament, the 22-person team competed in grade-level math competitions, mathletics and a team challenge, joining a field of over 600 student-mathletes from across the county.

For faculty advisors Stacey Levine and Rina Adams, the event was a day of tremendous pride. Both Levine and Adams said they were honored to work on a program that gives students the chance to hone their math skills in an environment marked by some healthy competition.

“The Mathletes are extremely dedicated and work incredibly hard, and we are honored to serve as their coaches,” the duo said.

Among the mathletes working hard was Luna Questelles, who finished in the top 20 in individual scoring among all seniors. Questelles was a highlight, but administrators at Baldwin said the real highlight was the performance of the team as a whole.

“Opportunities like the Nassau Math Tournament allow students to apply their mathematical thinking in meaningful and competitive ways,” Sixth-to-Twelfth Grade Mathematics Supervisor Jamie Abbi-Handler said. “Luna’s top 20 finish is an outstanding achievement, and the entire team represented our school with enthusiasm, confidence, and academic excellence.”
