Baldwin Woman Killed In Fiery Car Crash On Taconic Parkway

Good Samaritans got the car's two occupants out before first responders made it to the scene.

BALDWIN, NY — A Long Island woman was killed Sunday in a fiery one-car crash in Dutchess County. State Police said they were called to milepost marker 55.4 southbound on the Taconic State Parkway around 11:43 a.m. The preliminary investigation found the a 2014 Subaru Outback, driven by Lawrence Rycyk, 65 of Baldwin, was going south in the passing lane just north of Route 44 in Pleasant Valley.

The car left the western side of the roadway, striking a rock embankment and overturning.

It then became engulfed in flames, police said.

Two passersby got the driver and his passenger — Ronnie L. Rycyk, 64, also of Baldwin — out of the burning vehicle before first responders arrived on the scene.

Ronnie Rycyk was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lawrence Rycyk was taken to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The collision was reconstructed by the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and remains under investigation.
