Cover Letters... hot or not?

Add attachments here. We have all seen this on job applications, it is standard to upload your resume.... and perhaps something else? The Cover Letter.

I have been asked time and time again, "Do I really need a cover letter?". The answer is always... it depends.

If you are just applying to as many jobs as you can over your 10 minute break, (WARNING: NEVER DO THIS, more on job searches to come), you definitely do not seem to be the type of person who is very well versed in personal branding... or cover letters.

There are certain instances where a cover letter is a MUST HAVE. A few of these include:

  • Relocation- if you are looking to relocate due to a spouse who just received a promotion, or you are just too fed up with the cost of living or cold winters.
  • Reentering the workforce- so you couldn't lean all the way in like Sheryl Sandberg, that is OKAY! You had to focus on YOU, and now you are back, and ready for your next opportunity.
  • Exploring a different path- if you have been in accounting for over 10 years, missing the human interaction and want to try your hand at recruiting....GREAT! This is the time to let your experience shine through and explain how your years of accounting enables you to become a great recruiter of accountants.
  • A job you are over-qualified for- this may overlap with the above a bit, if you are looking to switch careers or want to add to your wheelhouse, you may have to take a step back and start at a lower level in the food chain.
  • A job you are under-qualified for- please note- if you just graduated with a history degree I doubt an amazing cover letter can land you the CFO job at Starbucks.. (if someone can prove me wrong- I would love to hear about it), but if you may be a couple of years short of the required/desired experience, this is a great way to show the significance of your past roles and the skills you have learned that will allow you to succeed at the job you are interested in.
  • A job at your dream company- talk about the passion you have for this company! Here is the perfect place to dive into your personal passion for this company, what it means to you, and why you would be so proud to work for that organization.

These are just a few. As always, do not write one cover letter and change the company name with each new application. WE WILL NOTICE. I have seen many cover letters in my day where another company (and a few times, a competitor) was listed in the cover letter, this is a WARNING: NEVER DO THIS moment.

Stay tuned for more details on cover letters, WARNING: NEVER DO THIS, and job searches.
