“I commend the Senate Republicans and the governor’s office for joining the Assembly Republican conference’s push to move expeditiously on options to help create vital resources to stem the heroin epidemic, which is claiming the lives of our friends and family members every day. My Assembly Republican colleague and I have held forums across our state, meeting with families of loved ones and hearing stories shared of tragic losses, struggles, and attempts at recovery. We all agree more must be done to end this devastating epidemic.
But, there is only one group keeping these resources from getting to the people who need them most – the Assembly Democrats. When you have the Assembly Health Committee Chairman, Richard Gottfried, saying that he isn’t “sold on the idea that more legislation needs to be introduced to address the state’s heroin problem,” that’s a huge red flag signaling where their priorities lie. We have many issues that New Yorkers want taken up before the end of session: ethics reform, true pension forfeiture, term limits, and now the heroin epidemic; instead, Assembly Democrats continue to put thousands of lives at risk by dragging their feet and voting on partisan, one-house measures that have no chance of becoming law.”
