Coming off a Veterans’ Day success where he helped bring veterans’ buy back legislation one step closer to reality, Assemblyman Brian Curran (Lynbrook – 21st A.D.) announced another victory today: Gov. Cuomo has opposed the Liberty Port Ambrose Deepwater Port, or offshore Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility, by Liberty Natural Gas, LLC. The Port Ambrose project is a marine facility for off-loading LNG proposed for construction off Long Beach and South Shore.
“On behalf of all of my constituents, including East Rockaway and Oceanside, as well as our south shore communities of Baldwin and Freeport, I want to thank Gov. Cuomo for opposing the Port Ambrose Deepwater project,” said Curran, who has consistently fought against this project. “Between legislative efforts, our petition, many town hall meetings, and literature and letters of opposition, this is a tremendous victory for our children who deserve to grow up with and enjoy Long Island’s pristine beach-fronts as we all have done. As much as this is about protecting the public’s health and our ocean beach communities, this is also about the preservation and conservation of our environment and vital natural resources. While we realize the importance of energy independence as a state and nation and developing those local sources to establish that independence, realizing the negative impact far outweighs the perceived benefits this project would have created. Again, thank you, Gov. Cuomo, for listening to the thousands of concerned residents in our communities.”

Earlier this year, Curran held a town hall meeting at the Oceanside Library on the Port Ambrose project, informing constituents of the issue; he wrote two letters to Gov. Cuomo outlining community opposition to the project and requesting a Governor veto of the proposal; and testified before the U.S. Maritime Administration Board (MARAD) in Long Beach on November 2, reiterating his opposition to the project, that video can be viewed here.
According to Liberty’s website, two buoys would be tethered to the ocean floor to connect ships to a proposed undersea pipeline that would deliver into existing gas infrastructures on Long Island.
