CURRAN SUPPORTS FANTASY SPORTS IN NYS

Press Release

Assemblyman Brian Curran (Lynbrook-21st AD) was pleased to support legislation that will make fantasy sports betting legal in the State of New York. Websites such as “FanDuel” became illegal in New York due to the lack of laws and regulations to make them safe and secure for all participants. With these new regulations in place, interactive fantasy sports are deemed “interactive sports fantasy contests,” which utilize skills of knowledge, and therefore do not constitute gambling.

“I am happy to support legalization of fantasy sports, which are enjoyed by so many people throughout New York,” said Curran. “By passing this legislation, we made an important distinction between illegal gambling and skill-based fantasy sports games. The new law will benefit our local economies and those who enjoy participating in this activity.”

In addition to imposing a 15 percent state-imposed fee on generated revenue within New York, there will now be many safeguards in place to ensure fair and legal participation. The bill limits each player to possessing only one account, prohibits minors from participating, and mandates the availability of information to ensure a level playing field.

Curran noted that passage of this bill will result in millions of dollars in additional tax revenue that will go directly to the New York State Lottery Fund and, in turn, our children’s education on Long Island and across New York State.
