Cyclones Offense Explodes in 13-5 Win Over Lynbrook

Zach Scaduto scored five goals and Peter Clark finished with a hat trick.

After watching its offense sputter for the first few non-league games this season, the South Side High School boy’s lacrosse team finally exploded on offense, scoring 13 goals to best rival Lynbrook, 13-5 on Tuesday night at Skelos Field.

Sean Kenny helped the Cyclones control the game, winning 15 of 17 face-offs, and South Side's offense made the most of its possessions. Zach Scaduto scored five goals, leader Bryan Gerrato added two more and had two assists, Peter Clark had a hat trick, and sophomore Cole Considine had the first two goals of his varsity career.

Head coach Steve DiPietro said he was was pleased with what he saw from his team, calling it the “most complete 48 minutes we’ve played all season.”

“We were able to use our speed and athleticism in the middle of the field to get things spread out, Kenny kept getting us possessions with his face-offs, and our defense was huge today holding their big guys in check,” he said. “We scouted them well, we expected what we saw.  It was nice to have that performance against a big rival.”

The offense kept the pressure on, taking 12 more shots than the Owls, but despite the impressive numbers it was Moriarty who caught the eye of Owls coach Bill Leighley. The South Side goalie finished with nine saves.

“Their goalie really stood on his head today," Leighley said. "He’s a great player, and he’s been great, and they’re lucky to have him up bouncing around in front of the cage. We like to get up and down the field when plays break down, but South Side didn’t have many of those today – they were well coached.”

DiPietro agreed that his goalie was an integral piece in the lopsided win.

“[Moriarty] has been steady for us all season," he said. "We know he can come up with big plays and bail us out of any situation, and he did that more than once today."

The win improves the Cyclones to 2-3 as they continue to prepare for its league schedule. If the Cyclones offense keeps running on all cylinders like it did against Lynbrook, DiPietro said it will be tough for opponents to stop them from scoring.

“You saw today what we can do if we’re clicking on offense, we have three, maybe four viable options that can score,” DiPietro said. “We have Gerrato and Scaduto occupying their best two defenders, and with Clark as a three, you have a really great third option. We have so many ways to score, it’s really difficult to defend.”
