Deaf Woman Files Lawsuit Against Rockville Centre Police Department

She says she was not provided an interpreter to communicate with police officers.

A woman from Uniondale has filed a lawsuit against the Rockville Centre Police Department for not providing her with an interpreter when she was pulled over during a DWI arrest, Newsday reports.

According to Newsday, the woman, Trista McCallister said she did not understand what was going on when she was pulled over on her way to the Rockville Centre train station on Oct. 15, 2015. The suite alleges that the officer tried to communicate with her via pen and paper, but that McCallister did not understand the officer's instructions when they conducted a sobriety test.

McCallister could communicate through American Sign Language (ASL), Newsday reported, but was not provided an interpreter until her court appearance the next day.
