Police ID Man Who Died After Alleged Drunk Driver Hit His Car

Police say the driver drove away, then fled on foot, and was later found sleeping in a boat the next town over.

UPDATE, 3 P.M. THURSDAY: Police have identified the man that died as Jovanni Bien-Aime, 21, of Baldwin.

UPDATE: Police say that one of the passengers in the car, a 21-year-old man, died from his injuries at Nassau University Medical Center. Officials say he died at 7:23 p.m. on Wednesday.

ORIGINAL STORY: Nassau police found a man sleeping in a boat after he fled a serious crash in Baldwin on Tuesday night.

According to police, a Nissan sedan with three occupants was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Milburn Avenue in Baldwin at 10:14 p.m. Police say the car was hit from behind by a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer being driven by Roy Gomez, 39, of archer Road, West Hempstead. A 65-year-old man in the car suffered serious injuries. The other two occupants, a female driver and another male passenger, suffered minor injuries.

After the collision, police say Gomez fled the scene in his car and parked a few blocks away and fled on foot. After an investigation, police located him sleeping in a boat on Woodcleft Avenue in Freeport at 3:30 a.m. He was arrested without incident.

Gomez is charged with second-degree assault, second-degree vehicular assault, DWI, leaving the scene of an accident and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
