Drunken Driving Crash Into Pole With 1-Year-Old In Car: Police
Stephanie Almonte faces several charges including aggravated driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.
OCEANSIDE, NY — A Freeport woman was charged with Leandra's Law for drunken driving with a one-year-old in the vehicle, police said.
Stephanie Almonte, 34, was traveling eastbound on Brower Avenue just before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, when she struck a pole near the intersection of Chance Drive, police said.
Officers and paramedics attempted to assess the child for medical care, but Almonte refused and became irate, authorities said.

They were eventually able to take the child to an area hospital for treatment.
Almonte was also taken to a hospital for treatment. She faces charges that include aggravated driving while intoxicated (Leandra's Law), endangering the welfare of a child, first-degree criminal contempt and six counts of second-degree harassment.

Almonte will be arraigned when medical practical.
