Elderly Massapequa Woman Shells Out Nearly $10K In Phone Scam: Police
The victim was told by a fake police officer that her daughter had been arrested.
MASSAPEQUA, NY — An elderly woman from Massapequa was the victim of a phone scam on Saturday.
The 86-year-old victim received a call from an unknown man claiming to be a police officer, authorities said.
The man said that the victim's daughter was arrested and needed $9,800 for bail. The victim was then connected with another person claiming to be a public defender.

She was told to withdraw $9,800 from her bank and contact him when she had the cash, police said.
The victim complied and an unknown woman picked up the money at her home. She left in a white Toyota Sienna.

The next day, the victim spoke to family members and learned that her daughter had not been arrested.
The Nassau County Police Department urges the community to be on alert and to remind vulnerable family members, friends and neighbors about potential scams or fraud.
