Family Turns to Community for Help After Mother's Death

The Burns Family has thousands of dollars in medical bills and other expenses, and is seeking help.

Cathy Burns developed problems with her pancreas a decade ago. The problem, however, was misdiagnosed.

That missed diagnosis led to 10 years of surgeries, organ transplants, cancer treatment and more. On Sept. 26, Cathy Burns died. She was 54 years old.

Through all of Cathy's sickness and surgeries, her husband, Brian, was right by her side. He was her primary caregiver for years, and as such hasn't had a full-time job. The bills kept piling up, with the couple having to pay $2,000 a month just for the health insurance.

Shortly before her death, the family started a GoFundMe page to raise money for Cathy's care. Now, the goal has become to help pay the funeral expenses and the lingering medical bills.

Cathy's illness led to multiple-organ failure, and eventually cancer.

"My wife had over 40 surgeries. And I'm talking big surgeries," Brian said. "She had a transplant in 2010 of stomach, duodenum, pancreas and small intestine in one surgery."

Cathy left behind her husband and five children. Their home is facing foreclosure and there are still medical bills to pay. So they're reaching out for help.

Anyone who's interested can donate to the family by visiting their GoFundMe page.
