Firefighters Douse Hempstead Basement Fire That Left 8 People Without A Home: NCFM

HEMPSTEAD, NY — 75 firefighters were on the scene to put out a basement fire at a Hendrickson Avenue home Sunday morning, extinguishing the blaze in about 25 minutes without any injuries, officials said.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office said the fire alarm was raised at 11:44 a.m. Sunday with the Hempstead Fire Department first on the scene. Joining Hempstead firefighters were personnel from the Elmont, Franklin Square & Munson, Freeport, Garden City, Rockville Centre, Roosevelt, South Hempstead, West Hempstead and Uniondale fire departments, officials said. In total, there were about 75 firefighters on the scene, fire officials said.

The fire was knocked down within 25 minutes with no injuries reported, officials said. Fire officials did not say how many people were home at the time of the fire, but said that the eight people who live at the Hendrickson Avenue address had their home declared uninhabitable after the fire.

In the aftermath of the blaze, the fire marshal’s office, police arson/bomb squad and local building department officials are investigating the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage, officials said.
