“What’s your damage, Heather?” On Friday July 28th, The Crossed Path Players, a completely-student run theatre group comprised of performers coming from all over Nassau County, will come together for a one-night-only performance of “Heathers The Musical (High School Edition).” In addition, the players will be collecting donations on the evening of the performance that will go directly to the Long Island chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Heathers: The Musical opened in 2014 at New World Stages, an off-broadway theater complex in New York City. The musical was based on Daniel Waters’ 1988 cult classic film of the same name, starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. After a smash run off-broadway, the musical gained a cult following of its own, and was soon released for licensing availability by the Samuel French licensing house. Being a show dealing directly with high schoolers, and having such a wide adolescent fanbase, writers Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe collaborated to create a version of the musical suitable for high school-aged performers - thus, “Heathers (High School Edition)” was born.
Heathers, taking place at Westerburg High School in 1989, follows the story of teenage outcast, Veronica Sawyer, who gets taken in by the most popular clique in school - the Heathers. By forging them a hall pass, Veronica gets a makeover that exudes total “hell on wheels”, and is finally looked just as highly upon in the halls of Westerburg as the Heathers are. While with the clique, Veronica meets troubled dark horse JD, who, with Veronica’s help, plans to make their high school a better place by eliminating anything, or anyone, that gets in his way. This classic dark comedy deals directly with relevant themes in today's high school society - such as bullying, power, and suicide. Through all of the chaos that Heathers brings with it, an overall message prevails that life can be beautiful, no matter the circumstance. That message works hand-in-hand with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - a non-profit organization dedicated to awareness and offering help towards those affected by suicide.
The Crossed Path Players’ “Heathers (High School Edition)” has been stage managed by Jacqueline Berkowitz and Natalie Palmer, Musically Directed by Alaina Anderson, Choreographed by Nicolette O’Keefe, and Directed and Produced by Doug Gallo. The production will open on Friday, July 28th, 2017 for a one-night-only performance at 7:00 PM. The performance will be held at Brookside Junior High School in North Merrick NY (1260 Meadowbrook Rd; North Merrick, New York 11566). The musical contains mature content and is not recommended for those under the age of 13. Admission is free, and any donations for the AFSP will be collected at the door.
