Hempstead Woman Accused Of Wielding Broken Glass Bottle, Spraying Cop With Chemicals: PD

HEMPSTEAD, NY — A South Hempstead woman was arrested Sunday morning after she wielded a broken bottle as a weapon during an altercation at a Willis Street home before spraying a police officer in the eyes with a chemical substance and kicking another officer while resisting arrest, police said.

Nassau County police said 27-year-old Carolynne Alvarez was arrested at 4 a.m. Saturday after police were called to the home on Willis Street. Upon arrival, police found Alvarez and another 27-year-old woman in a physical fight, police said. At this time, Alvarez tried to hit the other woman with a broken glass bottle and caught her in the finger, police said. The woman she struck suffered a laceration to that finger, police said.

After the broken bottle strike, police tried to arrest Alvarez, who “became violent and combative” toward the officers, spraying one of them in the eye with an unknown chemical substance that caused irritation to their face and eyes, police said. After being placed in custody and walked toward an ambulance, Alvarez again tried to resist her arrest, kicking a police officer in his knee, police said. Both of the officers and Alvarez were taken to the hospital, police said.

In the aftermath of Sunday’s incidents, Alvarez is charged with two counts of assault on a police officer, one count of second-degree assault, one count of third-degree menacing, one count of second-degree obstructing governmental administration and one count of resisting arrest, police said. Her arraignment is scheduled for Monday, police said.
