House Fire; Damage To Bedroom, 1 Firefighter Hurt: Police

The Baldwin house was unoccupied at the time of the Sunday morning fire, police say.

SOUTH HEMPSTEAD, NY — A house fire in South Hempstead early Sunday injured a firefighter.

The home was unoccupied at the time of the blaze, police said.

When officers arrived just after 5:30 a.m., the house at McDermott Road was filled with heavy smoke.

The South Hempstead Fire Department received assistance from the Baldwin Fire Department, Rockville Centre, Hempstead Fire Department and West Hempstead Fire Department.

The fire caused damage to one bedroom. One firefighter suffered a minor laceration to his right middle finger. He was treated by the Rockville Centre Fire Department.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal was on the scene. Although the fire is under investigation, police say it is not considered suspicious.
