ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — State senator Kevin Thomas is seeking a political upgrade. The three-term Democrat from Levittown has announced plans to run for the 4th Congressional District, Newsday reports.

Thomas, who was elected to the state senate in 2017, joins a field of Democrats looking to ultimately defeat the incumbent, Republican Anthony D'Esposito.

"With so much at stake for Long Island families, and a Republican Congress that refuses to act, it’s time we send someone to Washington who can get things done,” Thomas said in a statement. according to Newsday."I’ve proven in the NY Senate that I’m all about action and getting real results. In the coming days, I’ll have an announcement on my intentions and look forward to furthering the conversation."

Thomas is the only Democrat serving in the state senate. His victory over longtime incumbent Km Hannon made Thomas the first Indian-American New York state senator.

"Kevin Thomas’ record of support for Hochul’s radical Long Island housing compact, congestion pricing tax, and bail reform plan puts him squarely at odds with local voters who continue to support Congressman D’Esposito’s winning message of safe streets and affordable communities," D'Esposito spokesperson Matthew Capp said. "We look forward to Nassau County neighbors learning more about just how out of touch Thomas and his progressive competitors are with the wants and needs of Long Island."

Other Democrats looking toward a 2024 primary include former Hempstead Supervisor Laura Gillen and former Olympic figure skater Sarah Hughes, Newsday said.

For Gillen, it would be a rematch of the 2020 general election. She lost to D'Esposito by nearly 10,000 votes.
